Choir
"Amazing at singing and full of lots of joy and laughter and friendly people." So says one of our junior choristers who has been with us for five years.
We are a happy choir of around ten adults and thirteen juniors (aged 8 to 17), who pride ourselves in singing music to a high standard. Our repertoire covers all genres from Tallis to Goodall, early English choral to blues, and the music of contemporary composers – from Bob Chilcott to Adele and Ed Sheeran!
We practise on a Friday evening, and sing every Sunday morning and for various other services during the year. We have a busy schedule of weddings, both at St Andrew's and from time to time at other churches, and occasional concerts and social evenings. We also enjoy the annual RSCM Choir Festival in Hereford Cathedral every October, which we have been attending since 2000.
We appreciate social time together too. A summer Sunday lunch and a Christmas party are both regular events on our social calendar. We also enjoy singing for others: since December 2000 our carol singing events in and around Shifnal have raised over £2700 for charity.
The choir provides the chance for both musical and personal development: "The choir improves my singing skills. It is a place where I have friends,” says Olivia, "and also a way that I can learn about things that I never knew.” According to Libby: "It is a lovely thing to do on Fridays and Sundays."
We love music and music-making: "It gives me a chance to let myself go and express myself through my love of music,” says Ashleigh, and we all know that singing is good for your health, mentally, physically and spiritually.
The final word goes to former Head Chorister Katie who was a regular member for ten years, and still joins us when she is back in Shifnal: "For me, the choir is another home from home. Every year brings learning, fun and friendship across all age ranges. I don't know what I would have done without it!"
